West El Paso Nonprofit Serves Meals Without Charge, Grows Food On-Site
CityBeat Newsroom · October 19, 2026
The Mustard Seed Cafe, a nonprofit located off Sunset Road in West El Paso, operates a free meal program that serves anyone who walks through its doors, according to KVIA.
Carmen Estrada, the cafe's executive director, said the organization welcomes all comers without regard to circumstance. "We serve anybody who comes. Everyone is welcome. Everyone eats," Estrada told KVIA.
The cafe takes its name from a biblical parable about faith growing from small seeds. That philosophy extends to the organization's operations: the property includes a greenhouse, an aquaponics system, and a microgreens program that supply fresh ingredients for meals. The cafe also maintains a community apiary with native bees.
Meals prepared at the cafe reach residents in shelters, people experiencing homelessness, and families across the community. Estrada said the organization aims to address both hunger and dignity. "I want to believe that in every meal we give, we answer a prayer for somebody," she said. "That's part of the reason that we are healing."
The cafe does not charge for meals or services. Estrada emphasized that the organization's work is grounded in providing a space where people receive respect and acknowledgment. "All of us need something like that," she said. "We need a place where we receive dignity, respect and are called by our name."
Beyond meal service, the Mustard Seed Cafe offers volunteer opportunities and programming for people seeking to grow and heal. The organization also supports survivors of human trafficking. According to KVIA, interested community members can visit KVIA.com for information about volunteering or supporting the cafe.
