Young El Paso musicians showcase summer training at Boys and Girls Club

Participants in the Sun City Music Camp will perform Friday night at the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso's Club Petty location, demonstrating skills they developed over two weeks of instruction in vocals, guitar, bass and drums, according to KVIA.

The summer program is a collaboration among the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso, EP Launch and The Great Khalid Foundation. Linda Wolfe, executive director of The Great Khalid Foundation, mentored participants alongside the Pie Sisters, who provided additional instruction.

Wolfe said the program aims to expose young people to music instruction and equipment. "Sometimes all you've got to do is put the instrument in their hands, you know, and this program came with competent instructors that were able to get them to where they are," she said, according to KVIA.

Anthony Tomasheski, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso, emphasized the camp's accessibility. "Regardless of your circumstance, if you had a desire to learn to play an instrument, if you wanted to become a better musician, if you wanted to sing, this was a great opportunity," he said, according to KVIA.

Wolfe framed the work as foundational to developing future musicians. "You have no idea the impact that you will give a kid just by them learning music or them being stimulated by music. And it starts young. It starts here. These are the future stars," she said, according to KVIA.

The showcase will be held at the Great Khalid Foundation Music Room at Club Petty, 801 S. Florence St., at 6 p.m. Friday. Family members and supporters are invited to attend.
