UTEP defeats Texas Southern 51-10 for first win of 2026 season

UTEP secured its first win of the 2026 season Saturday night, defeating Texas Southern 51-10 at the Sun Bowl, according to KVIA.

The Miners' offense generated early momentum behind quarterback EJ Colson, who completed 6 of 9 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Colson also recorded a rushing touchdown as UTEP built control on both sides of the ball.

Running back Kam Thomas led UTEP's ground game with 92 rushing yards and a touchdown through two quarters. Cash Cheeks added 13 rushing yards and a score.

UTEP's defense made key stops to maintain its advantage. Esteban Guillory intercepted a Texas Southern pass in the second quarter, giving the Miners another scoring opportunity. Texas Southern managed 132 passing yards and 21 points through the first half but could not keep pace with UTEP's offense.

The victory comes one week after UTEP opened the season with a loss to Oklahoma. With the win, the Miners improve to 1-1 and will continue their schedule next week.
