The Red Cross opened a shelter at Horizon High School on Monday night to assist families displaced by flooding in Horizon City, according to KVIA. Runoff from weekend rain caused the flooding on Kila Street off Horizon Boulevard, Deputy Chief Brandon Kovach with El Paso County Emergency Services District 1 said.

The Horizon Fire Department reported that 39 homes and one trailer were affected by the floodwaters. Thirteen homes were evacuated, while 20 were placed under shelter-in-place orders. One pet died following the flooding.

Red Cross spokesperson Anna Apodaca said one family visited the shelter Monday night but did not remain. Families affected by the flooding are eligible to use the shelter for meals or temporary respite. The Red Cross is still determining how long the shelter will remain operational.

The Horizon Fire Department will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday to provide additional details about the flooded homes, according to KVIA.
