One in five women experience postpartum depression, yet the condition remains widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed, according to KVIA reporting on mental health awareness.

Wendy Davis, president and CEO of Postpartum Support International, said the prevalence of postpartum depression contrasts sharply with how little the public discusses it. "That's such a prevalent condition, and yet people don't talk about it, and they don't recognize the symptoms," Davis said, according to KVIA.

Postpartum depression symptoms can begin before, during, or after pregnancy and vary from person to person. Common signs include anger or rage, lack of interest in the baby, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, and persistent crying or sadness. Many women also report feelings of guilt, shame, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed.

Davis stressed that these symptoms are temporary and treatable. She emphasized that women experiencing postpartum depression should not feel ashamed or guilty, as the condition is a medical reality requiring support rather than judgment.

The conversation around postpartum depression has gained momentum in recent months following high-profile cases and public figures speaking openly about their experiences. Actress Hayden Panettiere was outspoken about her own struggles with postpartum depression before her death. A separate legal case drew national attention when a mother's attorneys argued she experienced postpartum psychosis when she harmed her three young children.

According to KVIA, resources through Postpartum Support International are available to anyone, regardless of whether they have received a formal diagnosis. Those struggling with symptoms or concerned about a loved one can contact the organization for support and information.
