El Paso clinic launches suicide prevention push for military families

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Endeavors is urging El Pasoans to have difficult conversations about suicide prevention during September, according to KVIA.

The clinic is participating in the Cohen Veterans Network's "Ask Anyway: Conversations to Save a Life" campaign, which encourages people to check in with someone they are concerned about and ask directly if they are considering suicide.

Dr. Karina Bocanegra, the clinic's director, said many people worry that asking someone about suicide could worsen the situation. "Research shows quite the opposite, that asking can save a life," Bocanegra said in an interview with ABC-7, according to KVIA.

Bocanegra emphasized that the campaign is particularly important for the military community because veterans face a higher suicide rate than the civilian population. The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic provides mental health services to active-duty service members with a TRICARE referral. Financial assistance is available for copays, and the clinic works to ensure cost does not become a barrier to care.

The Endeavors facility also serves other community members through additional programs, including first responders and Border Patrol agents. Bocanegra encouraged anyone struggling or in crisis to seek help. "Just know that you're not alone," she said.
