Canutillo ISD launches $4 million private fiber network for schools

Canutillo Independent School District formally launched a $4 million private fiber network Wednesday, marking what Superintendent Josue Borrego described as a modernization effort to strengthen digital learning across the district.

The fiber network will provide students and staff with high-speed, reliable internet connectivity for classroom instruction and learning tools, according to KVIA. The district said the infrastructure will "guarantee resilience and uptime, enabling uninterrupted access to digital learning tools, virtual classrooms, and advanced educational resources."

Borrego said the entire project was funded through a federal program with no contribution from local taxpayers. The district partnered with UDT, a technology enabler, and WANRack, an infrastructure provider, to construct and manage the network.

Beyond educational applications, the network will support the district's security systems for computers and buildings. "Every day, we're so dependent on connectivity. Students use their laptops; teachers use [them] to do their lessons," Borrego said, according to KVIA. "This will allow us to provide a top-tier service to our students and our families."

The groundbreaking Wednesday represented the formal start of the project, which aims to ensure that all students in Canutillo ISD have access to dependable digital infrastructure for learning.
